Living With Mental Illness and Becoming Stronger
Because I was born in a Third World Counry – Zambia in Africa – it was had to identify my illness as a child. My bi-polar disorder went undiagnosed for years until I moved with my family to the United States when I was twelve. Since being diagnosed I have learned bi-polar disorder can be described as having two polar extremes to your moods. On one side is depression, where you feel low, and then there is a high side, where you feel manic and extremely hyper and excited, with anxiety and racing thoughts.
In my book, “Strengthening Your Identity While the Shadow is in Front of You”, I have chosen to be candid about my mental illness because I want people to understand bi-polar disorder fully. I also don’t want those who have it to feel stigmatized by the reputation it has been given by the media. By telling my story, I hope to remove the fear and misunderstandings that surround mental illness, and hopefully give others the power to keep fighting.
I will take you on a journey that details how I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and learned to live with the illness. My objective is to inspire you, if you have bi-polar disorder and want to live life fully despite the darkness that daily surounds you.
My book will share with you how to:
- Know where you came from so you know where you’re going
- Indulge in the moment to create happy memories to sustain you in difficult times
- Learn from your environment and adapt to survive and thrive
- Stay true to yourself in the midst of madness
- Unmask the monsters in your life that try to hinder your healing
- Have the courage to ask for help when it is needed
- Unravel your special gifts to share with the world
Unfortunately, there are people out there who will demean you, trick you, disrespect you, and maybe even violate you, and whose only goal is to destroy you by obliterating your dignity and identity. I will show you how to spot them because they camouflage themselves along with the population, hiding behind their invisible masks.
How you can live and cope with mental illness…
I will also offer you tips for coping with your illness that I have learned from medical doctors and people all over the world where I have traveled and lived. These tips are not soley based on what I have learned medically, but also include how to manage the illness and find natural, holistic, and meditative treatments for it. I have to be honest, I’m still working on meditation and lifestyle choices.
Finally I will share with you my own experiences with this illness. My choice to become happy didn’t come easily; as you know, mental illness is a serious disease that affects not only how you feel, but also how you view the world. Many times, I thought about and attempted suicide, not knowing exactly what was going on with me. At tmes, I didn’t realize I was suffering from a mental illness. It would sort of take me over like an invasion. It made me send text messages to friends and family that didn’t make sense. It made me push the pills down my throat when I didn’t want to. It made me denounce my God when I didn’t want to.
My book is my personal journey with bi-polar disorder…it is not medical advice…for that you should consult with your doctor.
